Discover HARTford at Night:
University of Hartford Presents New
Evening Arts Program for Professionals

Dateline: 02/16/00

The University of Hartford is offering a new program for professionals seeking to combine an evening of entertainment and fine dining with education about the arts. "Discovering Hartford at Night" is a series of activities that takes advantage of some of the area's biggest cultural events of spring 2000.

The program takes care of all of the arrangements--parking, reservations, purchasing show tickets--so that you can simply relax and enjoy learning something new and meeting others. According to a brochure describing the new Continuing and Professional Education offering, "This will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of Hartford's premier events, meet new people and develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the arts. Each program is enhanced by an educational component including historical background, artistic perspectives, musical composition, theme and 'behind the scenes' activities."

The first event in the series is "POPS with Doc!" on February 18, 2000. The evening includes not only a concert at The Bushnell featuring Tonight Show veteran Doc Severinsen, but a pre-show reception where lecturer Professor Charles Turner will discuss the history of the trumpet and famous trumpeters and play excerpts from Doc Severinsen's career. Turner performed with Severinsen in his college band. Dinner will be served at the University of Hartford's ASK House in Hartford prior to the show. The cost is $95 for individuals, $170 for couples.

The second event is "Enchanted April," March 23, 2000, a theatrical adventure that features a performance by Hartford Stage of the play that is based on the novel that inspired the 1992 film, Enchanted April. Professor Sherry Buckberrough will present a pre-show lecture at the University of Hartford's Downtown Center that will explore fashion of the 1920s. Participants will enjoy dinner at Max Downtown before the performance. The cost is $95 for individuals, $170 for couples.

The third and final event in this series is "The Civil War," to be held May 18, 2000. The evening's events include a performance of the new musical, The Civil War, by the composer of Jekyll & Hyde and The Scarlet Pimpernel, starring actor John Schneider. A wine and hors d'oeuvre reception will be held at the University's Museum of American Political Life before the show, and Professor Warren Goldstein will discuss the issues raised by the war and how they defined the American nation. The cost is $95 for individuals, $170 for couples.

All programs begin at 5 p.m. To make reservations for any or all of the "Discovering Hartford at Night" events, call (860) 524-7739, ext. 17, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. There is a discounted rate of $255 available for individuals who enroll in all three events. You may also request to be notified of upcoming events for the summer and fall seasons.
